Dr. Meena Thirunavu specializes in the treatment of a wide range of oncologic and hematologic disorders. Her special interests include breast cancer, lymphomas, cancer genetics and coagulation disorders. Dr. Thirunavu is board certified in Hematology and Medical Oncology. Located at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Thirunavu is part of the community oncology division.
Dr. Thirunavu received her medical training at Government Medical College in Trivandrum, India. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Residency Programs in Austin, Texas. During her residency, she was distinguished as an outstanding Hematology/Oncology resident. She also served as the Internal Medicine Chief Resident in her fourth year. She completed her Hematology/Oncology fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center with special training in breast oncology. She has been in practice in the Midwest for the past 6 years before joining the faculty in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta.
Her professional affiliations include American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology and American Medical Association.
During her fellowship years, Dr. Thirunavu was involved in cancer research looking at the role of vitamin D and prevalence of low bone density in premenopausal women at increased risk for breast cancer. She also has had poster presentation at the American Society of Hematology meetings regarding role of Rituximab in Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic purpura.
